Photography School: What to Look For

There are as many different reasons to take a photography class as there are things to photograph. Perhaps you want to get into wedding photography, take pictures of your children, or capture scenery when you travel. Because there are so many different reasons to improve your skills, it's important that you chose the right photography school for you.

Your Expectations
Have you ever read a book review on Amazon where the reviewer purchased the book thinking it was a romance and instead it was a thriller or something like that? They give the book a 1-star rating and then leave scathing remarks in the comments section, all because their expectations weren't met. If you want to be happy with the results of your photography class, then you need to know what it is you want to get out of it. Do you want sharper images, to learn how to photograph birds, or how to work with varying exposure times? Make sure you know what it is you want before you sign up for a class so you won't be disappointed.

Read the Syllabus
Now that you know what it is you want, you'll be able to compare it to the class syllabus. You can usually find these online; or, you can go into the school and request a copy. One of the great things about online courses is that the school may be located in Alabama, but you can take classes in your home. This opens up a world of photography education that was previously limited by proximity.
You'll probably find that the classes are made up for different skill levels. There will be everything from beginning classes to advanced and specialized courses. If your goal is to learn wildlife photography skills, yet you haven't so much as held a camera before, then you'll need to start at the beginner's level and that's perfectly okay. Don't think you'll be bored with the basics because more often than not you get to choose your subject. If you're interested in photographing birds, cats, or people, those are the subjects you will use to learn.

Try a Sample
If you choose a traditional class, see if you can sit in on a class for a day before you sign up. You don't have to try the exact class you're looking to take, but try to find one form the same instructor. Many colleges, institutes, and universities are more than willing to offer a tour.

An online will have a sample class you can preview. It only takes a few minutes for you to see if you like the instructor, the layout of the class, and the subject matter. Once you have a feel for the learning environment, you'll be much more prepared to make a decision about signing up. On internet courses are especially easy because you can log in at your convenience, watch the videos, download notes, submit assignments, and interact with other students, without leaving your home or office.
